New Fourth of July Festivities
/In past years, I’ve written about where to go for good fireworks on the Fourth of July. This year I’m excited to share a brand new event the whole family can enjoy.
On July 4th from 5:00 – 9:30 p.m., Palmetto Bay is utilizing their Downtown area (centered at Franjo Road and Hibiscus Street) to put on an Independence Day celebration that is sure to be a blast. Going well beyond just a fireworks display, the multi-hour event will have tons of fun things to do.
An entire kid zone area will offer free rides (both inflatable and mechanical attractions) along with face painting and stilt walkers to keep the kids happy. Old-time sack races are also on the schedule. Around 6:00 p.m., there will be an all-American hot dog eating contest. After that, join in the “Around The World” Zumba group fitness experience. Then, on the main stage, catch some great tunes from the all Miami-Dade Fire Rescue-member band “The Fire Brigade”.
During the day, more than 20 vendors will make sure there are plenty of food, drink and refreshments options on hand. Adults will love the beer-garden, complete with frozen margaritas. They’ll be plenty of food variety for every palate.
Parks Director Fanny Carmona explained, “Our residents wanted more sponsored family events and we are proud to start our own 4th of July tradition with this massive event.” Communication Director Bill Kress added, “It’s another great holiday event in Palmetto Bay with food, entertainment and community.”
The giant fireworks display starting around 9:00 p.m. (when it gets dark enough) is sure to please everyone. Carmona said, “Unlike other firework venues, we have plenty of place for people to spread out, congregate and relax as the shells burst overhead.”
Organizers suggest you bring sunscreen, blankets, lawn chairs and bug spray. Tossing a ball or Frisbee might be fun too. Leave personal fireworks, pets and grills at home. You can certainly bring your favorite liquid refreshments, but remember public alcohol consumption laws apply.
Director of Building and Zoning Ed Silva remarked, “We have a unique jewel here and an overwhelming demand to develop this area into a thriving downtown. We believe this Fourth of July event will serve as our cornerstone event and look forward to years of fun and success with it.”
While biking is encouraged, parking will be available all around the site, with local businesses opening their lots. The Village website will also be updated with park-and-shuttle locations. Handicap vehicles will be accommodated close to the venue.
Putting on a free event like this comes with costs. Village Manager Ron Williams noted, “We are gratified with the outpouring of support including a generous donation from our good neighbors to the north, the Village of Pinecrest. We anticipate this celebration will become the signature annual event for Downtown Palmetto Bay for years to come – and look forward to seeing our residents truly enjoy the holiday right here in Palmetto Bay.” Other sponsors are Corradino Group, Evening’s Delight, Ludovici & Ludovici, Stantec and Waste Management.
