The Beautification of US1 (Useless-1 or South Dixie Highway)
/The main drag from I-95 to the Keys is US1 (aka South Dixie Highway). My in-laws and many others affectionately call it Useless-1. As an important and highly utilized road, we've all had more than our fair share of time to look around and take in its surroundings. Greenery is probably not the first thing you think about when you think US1.
Well, Cutler Bay has joined the cause with Coral Gables, Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay to make your vista a little more "buena" as you roll down the highway. At odds with the community plans is FPL's initiative to place many towering power lines nearly 100ft tall) right along the highway.
In today's Miam Herald, an article explains that these same communities are asking FPL to use underground lines instead. Besides the reduction of eyesore, many believe buried transmission lines would harden us from hurricanes. Problem is, it costs 8x more to do buried power.
Gov. Charlie Crist and his cabinet won't likely make a deicision on this until next year, but I urge my fellow residents to vocie their opinion now.
